Many business owners ask me if there is one simple thing they can do to help manage their people more effectively … and reduce the number of staff problems they may have
Well there is, but before I answer that question, let us think about ourselves …
Your team members are no different from you - if they are not learning, feeling valued, making a difference, then they become disengaged in what they do and that impacts your business. So, in order to engage them, you need to focus on the most important person in their life - themself. In other words, give them ME-time!
When was the last time anyone showed genuine interest in you as a person, instead of you as an employee or on the work you do / did for them? When was the last time you had a decent conversation with a member of your team that focused on them as an individual, as opposed to their work or the business
Job chats are one way to give your team ME-time. A job chat is a structured, 45-minute, 2-way conversation about your employee that takes place every 2 – 3 months. Both parties need to prepare – the sort of topics that should be covered are as follows:
Job chats give both you and your employee the opportunity to discuss their performance and goals. You ask the questions; they talk about themselves and then you follow-up. You can both bring up the little niggles before they become major issues; the focus is positive and supportive, not negative or punishing … and it’s easy to take notes in case you have to follow up on any point discussed at a future date
But I’m busy, I hear you say - OK, let’s do the maths!
Too busy to commit to that!
It’s a no-brainer!
However, what about me, I hear you say! What about my ME-time? Don’t forget, you employee yourself - if you sat down for one hour a quarter and reviewed the eight key areas listed above, just imagine the impact that could have on the success of your business
Be selfish! ME-time improves overall business performance for yourself, your team and your business, whether you have employees or not!
